Social Science in Scholarship Exams — Why History and Geography Questions Trip Students

Social Science (part of the SAT section in NMMS and similar exams) is often underestimated because students assume it requires only memorisation. In practice, examiners frame questions using unfamiliar contexts — for example, describing a historical event without naming it and asking students to identify it. This requires conceptual understanding, not just a list of dates and names. The most common mistake is preparing only Indian History and neglecting Geography and Political Science chapters. In recent Bihar NMMS papers, Geography chapters (Resources, Agriculture, Industries) and Civics chapters (Indian Constitution, Parliament) together account for nearly 40% of Social Science marks. Study tip: prepare a one-page 'cause-and-effect map' for major historical events and each Geography topic. For example: 'Colonialism → cash crop forcing → Bengal famine → 1857 Revolt → more administrative control.' These maps help answer inference-based questions that a simple date list cannot. Revise NCERT Class 8 History and Geography chapters at least twice, and focus on the 'Let Us Recall' and 'Let Us Discuss' questions at the end of each chapter.
